How to Double Twitter Traffic to Your Website in 30 days

Ever feel like you’re spending all your time on Twitter but most people are not reading your tweets?
Well…
The reality is that most people are not reading your tweets…!
But… that doesn’t mean that you can’t increase the number of people who do see them.
In this article, I’m going to show you how we increased traffic from Twitter to our website by 106% in less than 30 days.
Yes, we more than doubled our traffic from our Twitter account!

1. We analyzed our account

You may have seen our ultimate guide to Twitter analytics recently, where we shared how you can analyze your Twitter account.  If you did, you will remember this image!

Before you start, you need to analyze your account for the things that are relevant to you in the chart above.
How many people are your tweets reaching?  What demographics do your audience fit into?  How effective are the hashtags you are using?
What you don’t measure, you can’t improve!
It’s important to have a baseline of how things are so that you can measure the impact of any changes you make.

2. We got more followers

It makes sense that, if you get more relevant followers, you have a chance to get more traffic.
Relevant is the most important word.
If they are not relevant, they are a waste of time.  Having a high number of followers who have no interest in your industry or your brand will do you no favors at all!
I’ve been testing out Social Quant for the last couple of weeks, which identifies relevant people to follow.
These tools are not always great but this one is really find good people to follow.  You know it’s working when you are getting lots of opportunities to engage with new followers who then tweet you to thank you for the follow.
They are not passive Twitter users, they are happy to engage right from the start… which is encouraging when it comes to future engagement with your tweets.

3. We started on Blab… hang on a minute, what’s that?

Blab is like Google Hangouts, except it works…
You can have video conversations of up to four people at the same time, broadcasting live.

While that is happening, there is a stream of conversation happening from the people who are watching your blab.
Blab is very much connected to Twitter.  When someone is promoting the show, it’s shared out on Twitter.  When people are sharing information when the show is on, they usually share it on Twitter.
This increased activity on your Twitter account results in more engagement, more followers and more traffic.

4. We improved the content we shared

A couple of months ago, I looked at our Twitter accounts and wondered why so many tweets didn’t have images.
The tool we were using wasn’t automatically picking up the images.
Yes…
Tweets with images get more retweets.
D’oh…!
If you look at our account now, you’ll see there are images with 90% of the tweets.  We typically create images for our posts using Canva.  Here’s an example:

Tweets with images are more likely to stand out on a crowded timeline, they look more attractive, and they are eye catching.  Could you add more images to your tweets?

5. We shared more content

As we were still getting good engagement, we started scheduling more content.
Tweets disappear very quickly from users’ timelines, so the likelihood is that most people don’t see your content.
How many people are on Twitter for more than an hour a day?  Not many.  And even those who are don’t see every tweet that passes through their stream.
So… if you share content every hour, the same people don’t see your content.
You can usually tweet this frequently without worrying about overwhelming your followers.  It can be a really effective way of improving your visibility on the channel.
We don’t share all of our content but we are sharing more of other people’s – and our own – and this is getting us more traffic!

What’s next?

We can all be smarter about how we share our content.
If we repeat-share our content (which we advise doing), we should vary the message and image for each post.
For example…
It’s often better to pick out an interesting quote in an article than to share the article title (unless it’s controversial or particularly compelling).
And it’s better to share an image that captures attention… we’re going to start sharing some animated gifs to capture attention.
This way, you can share the same post in a number of different ways: with different text, or different images.  It is not repetitive, and keeps variety in your Twitter stream while promoting the same content

How to build email subscribers from Social Media

I remember reading an article years ago about email being dead.
Well…long live email.
When you share something out on social media channels typically less than 5% of people actually get to see it.
If you’re sharing on email around 20% of people will see it.
And…
….there’s also another difference.
Seeing something on social media is like seeing a billboard as you’re driving by.  With email you stop at the billboard!
Email is and will continue to play an important role in Internet marketing.  Look at the research below from eConsultancy which shows that email is still the highest converting channel over all other online marketing channels!

So how does social media contribute towards building email subscribers?

Social media has many uses but one is a channel which you can use to build your audience.
As you build relationships within your audience more of your audience will pay attention to what you share and end up on your website.
You don’t typically sell anything on social media.
You build an audience and relationships and then bring people back to your home base (your website)
This could be to buy your product or…
..if they are not ready to buy then you could encourage them to become an email subscriber so you can continue to market to them.
If someone sees a tweet about you this is the start of a potential relationship.  But it’s probably too early for them to buy something from you and that is why email is so useful and powerful to help build that relationship over time.
So how does social media contribute to growth of emails subscribers…
Let’s see… here are 4 tactics to consider:

1. Pin content on social channels directing to landing pages

Some of the channels (e.g. Twitter and Facebook) allow you to pin content to the top of your feed.  This is a golden opportunity to offer something of value that will encourage people visiting your profile to visit your website.
For example, create a pinned post with a nice image that directs people back to an opt-in on your website.
Mike from SocialQuant has the following pinned to Twitter:
At the time of writing this got over 5,000 clicks with 2,000 email opt-ins.  That’s a lot of opt-ins for a pinned post!!

2.  Change your profile image to promote your opt-in

If you look at Kim Garst’s Facebook page you’ll see that her profile image promotes an opt-in.  If you click the ‘shop now’ button this brings you to a landing page.
The people that see this image is not typically your existing fans.  This is targeted at new fans and I’m sure Kim gets opt-ins every day.

You’re building fans but also building email subscribers.  Ideally you should encourage fans to become email subscribers and vice versa!

3.  Share more content that results in website visitors

If you can get more traffic from social media to your website you have a much better chance of increasing your email subscribers.
You have created great content so if you can get more visitors some of those visitors will want to get more content from you.
An example of how you can get more traffic is using evergreen content.
Evergreen content is content that doesn’t run out of date.  In the following you can see a queue of content set up using Edgar.  With Edgar you create buckets of content.  For example ‘Evergreen posts’ are blog posts that don’t go out of date.  There is a constant feed of existing blog content which is shared which results in more regular traffic to your existing blog content.

15 Awesome Social Media Apps for iPhone

Using your mobile for social media marketing will make you more productive and efficient when marketing your business on social media.  You have your mobile with you 24 hours a day so you might as well get more benefit from it!
Some applications will just waste your time and some will benefit your business.  The applications we have selected below will make you more effective on social media.

Note: You should create a folder on your mobile device and add in any relevant apps.  It’s much better to be organized and bunch them all together!

1. Catch up on blog content using Feedly

How often are you sitting around for 5 or 10 minutes waiting for a meeting to start, waiting for a bus, on a train etc.?
This is the perfect opportunity to catch up on the blogs you read.
Instead of visiting your favorite blogs every day, add them to Feedly and track them through this tool.
The mobile app is really nicely designed and it’s easy to read and share content from it.

2. Manage Twitter using Tweetbot

Tweetbot is an iPhone app for managing Twitter.  It’s really nicely designed and easy to use.
It’s $9.99 to buy, which might put some people off, but it is worth it.
Here are some of the features:
  • Mute people, keywords or tweet sources
  • Monitor people liking or resharing your content in real time
  • View analytics in real time (e.g. someone retweeting or favoriting your content)
  • Quick reply from notifications
  • The app was designed to be simple to use and customizable to your needs and it provides shortcut ways of completing tasks.

3. Catch up on your podcasts using Overcast

Overcast is my favorite app for catching up on podcasts.
My favorite features are being able to click a button to skip ahead (or back) in 30 second slots, speed up the conversation and automatically cut out any long pauses.
It’s simple to use and well worth a try.

4. Livestream to Facebook using Switcher Studio

You can go to Facebook and click a button to live stream but, if you want to have a bit more control and functionality, there are a few different live streaming apps available.
One of them is Switcher Studio, which is a mobile-based app with a desktop component.  I heard about this originally when shared by my buddy Brian Fanzo.
You kick off the live streaming from your iPhone but then you can switch to various cameras or to a desktop view.
You can have nice backgrounds, swap to images, add your own branding, do post-production editing and more.

Share your imagery and videos using a variety of apps

You can’t pick just one app as you’ll have different requirements and each app offers something different.  Here’s a selection of apps that are worth considering.  Remember… people get bored seeing the same styles so even if two apps are very similar the templates they provide may be different so it’s still worth checking them out.

5. PRISMA

This is a relatively new app that allows you to put pretty cool filters on images. It’s like Instagram filters on steroids.  Here’s an example:

6. Phonto

Neat little app for adding text and changing image backgrounds.  There’s a free, limited version but you’ll end up buying the additional backgrounds soon as you start using it.

7. Wordswag

An old favorite that provides great templates to add some spice to your images.  Nice backgrounds, good text variations, colors etc.  You can easily change the size and how the text is laid out on the screen using your fingers.

8. Rhonna

With Rhonna, you can resize an image to the correct dimensions, add text, and change backgrounds.  It has a lot of similar functionality to Wordswag.  You can also apply different background to images so these might appeal to you more than what is provided by Wordswag.

9. Ripl

Ripl is a fairly new app where you add a series of images, pick a design and then it will create a video based on the images.  Very simple to use and you create some nice videos.

10. Boomerang

Not to be confused with Boomerang for Gmail, this is an app provided by Instagram.  You create a short video and it adds some funky animation to it.

11. Diptic

Diptic is a great tool for creating photo collages.  You specify the pictures, pick a layout, do some customization and then share it!

12. Color Splash

This is such a cool app.  You pick a picture from your phone and it dulls down the the color.  You then use your finger to highlight an area of the photo and it will change this to full color.  See the example below where everything other than the hot air balloon is in black and white.

Everything is in black and white except the image in focus

13 & 14. Manage your social media presence

If you want a more comprehensive tool for managing social media, a lot of the social media management tools, such as Agorapulse or Hootsuite, provide mobile versions of their management tools.
Agorapulse, for example, has a really nice user interface. Buffer’s mobile appis another iPhone tool that is simple and easy to use with a good design.

15.  Create imagery using Canva

Canva provide a very use to use, template driven, tool to build images. You can now build them on your iPhone app!

Summary

There are so many apps available for our mobile devices and, at times, we rely on our desktops.  But, when you get used to using mobile, you’ll end up saving time as you’ll be able to catch up with everything when you’re out and about. Also, if you have easy editing apps you can customize your pictures before you share them.
