HOW TO KEEP YOUR ONLINE REPUTATION INTACT

HOW TO PROTECT YOUR ONLINE REPUTATION

Earlier this month I was part of an expert panel with MediaLeaders. The expert panel was comprised of four marketing pros from around the country. Together with Josh Ochs of Medialeaders, we discussed reputation management. The article “Social Media Tips for Reputation Management” came out great. It included a video of our Skype call.
Watch the video here.

KEEPING YOUR ONLINE REPUTATION INTACT

The premise of keeping your reputation intact is fairly simple:
  • Set policies
  • Monitor
  • Listen
  • Join the conversation
  • Monitor
  • Listen
  • Respond
  • Monitor
  • Listen
Monitoring and listening are important because you want to be available instantly when a conversation about you or your brand turns negative.
As a brand or individual, your online reputation should be on the forefront of all your social media efforts.
Brands should have social media policies in place to protect themselves and to set clear expectations on how to handle potential problems.

WHAT STORY WILL YOUR SERP TELL?

When I was asked “What online marketing tips would you teach a small business to earn good brand reputation online?” I answered that creating several (new) social media profiles helps your SERP rankings, meaning that by creating these profiles, they should be listed on your SERP as these will be indexed by search engines.
Here is how that works!
Your SERP is your Search Engine Results Page.
When you Google “your business name” what comes up in Google is the SERP Page for your business.
You have (some) control over your SERP; you can’t delete anything (bad) that has been written about you on other people’s websites, but you can add positive write ups to it which will most likely push the bad (older) content down until it’s disappeared to page 2, and guess what?
A cheap (free) way to get indexed in a positive way is to create those additional social media profiles; make sure to fill out the bios with your desired keywords!
You can also try to get (free) press; do you volunteer your time for an organization who has a website and/or blog? Offer to write for them or be interviewed. Any recent write up with your brand or personal name attached will help push an older, bad review or bad write up down lower and lower!
I highly recommend putting a Google Alert on your name (and all variations of your name) as an extra precaution so you can ‘catch’ positive and negative press as it happens!

LINKEDIN PUBLISHER CAN BOOST YOUR SERP QUICKLY

When I was checking my own personal SERP recently (I was about to lecture to a class of college seniors about the importance of LinkedIn) I added an ‘image’ search. Most of the images that showed up at the top of the search results under my name came from my LinkedIn Publisher articles, including several very recently published articles!
If you need a quick SERP improvement of your name, I would suggest putting a bit of effort into that platform!

WHAT CAN YOU DO ON A DAILY OR WEEKLY BASIS TO MONITOR YOUR ACCOUNTS?

According to our panel, one of the most important things to do is allocate marketing money to a dedicated person to monitor their brand!
“Things can very quickly escalate into a bad situation when a bad review comes in or somebody starts bashing a product or service on your Facebook page, for example. So the fact somebody is there monitoring and listening is very important.”

This person can be an onsite social media manager, an offsite social media freelancer (like myself), or a social media agency.
Ignoring this important piece to your brand’s online reputation management, can cost your dearly.
